Acer cappadocicum 'Rubrum', commonly referred to as the Red Cappadocian Maple, is a striking deciduous tree renowned for its vibrant foliage and elegant stature. This cultivar presents a splendid display of colour from spring through autumn. Initially, the leaves unfurl in shades of bright red, eventually maturing to a lush green in the summer, before transforming into a spectacular array of golds and oranges in the fall. This dynamic colour progression makes it a focal point in any landscape throughout the growing season.
The Red Cappadocian Maple can achieve a mature height of approximately 12 to 15 meters and spreads to around 8 to 10 meters, making it a magnificent specimen or shade tree for medium to large gardens. It’s rounded to oval canopy offers ample shade, creating a cool, serene environment beneath its boughs. Acer cappadocicum 'Rubrum' is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, though it thrives best in well-drained, fertile soils. It exhibits a preference for a position in full sun to partial shade, where its leaves can achieve the most vibrant coloration.
Notable for its adaptability, the Red Cappadocian Maple is relatively low maintenance, requiring minimal pruning to maintain its shape and health. It is also notably resistant to many of the pests and diseases that commonly afflict maples, making it a robust and enduring addition to the landscape. Its tolerance for a variety of soil conditions and its ability to withstand urban pollution make it an excellent choice for city parks and streetscapes as well as suburban gardens. Whether planted as a standalone specimen or as part of a larger arboreal collection, Acer cappadocicum 'Rubrum' offers year-round interest and a touch of majesty to any setting.
