The Amur Maple (Acer ginnala) is a versatile and attractive deciduous tree notable for its vibrant autumn foliage and adaptability to various growing conditions. This small tree or large shrub typically reaches a mature height of 5-10 meters with a similar spread, making it an excellent choice for smaller landscapes or as a specimen plant in larger gardens.
One of the key features of the Amur Maple is its stunning fall colour, which ranges from bright oranges and reds to deep burgundy hues. The tree's leaves are three-lobed and have a glossy green appearance during the growing season before transforming in the autumn. In the spring, it produces small, fragrant yellowish-white flowers that give way to winged samaras, which are sometimes referred to as "maple keys" or "helicopters."
Amur Maple is highly adaptable to various soil types, thriving best in well-drained soils but tolerating a range from sandy to clay soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade, making it a flexible option for different garden settings. Additionally, it is relatively drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry periods. This tree is also known for its resilience against urban pollution, making it a suitable choice for city landscapes. Its compact size and striking fall colour make the Amur Maple a favourite among gardeners and landscape designers alike.
