The Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’, commonly known as the Bloodgood Japanese Maple, is a striking deciduous tree that is highly prized for its vibrant foliage and elegant form. This cultivar is renowned for its stunning, deep red to purple leaves that retain their color throughout the summer and transition to a brilliant crimson in the autumn. The tree typically grows to a mature height of 3-7 meters with a spread of approximately 4-6 meters, forming a rounded, graceful canopy that adds a touch of sophistication to any landscape.
One of the key features of the Bloodgood Japanese Maple is its versatility in different garden settings. It thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils, making it suitable for a variety of soil types. The tree prefers full sun to partial shade, although it can tolerate a fair amount of shade, which can help protect its delicate foliage from scorching in hotter climates. However, in regions with intense summer heat, some afternoon shade can be beneficial to maintain leaf color and prevent stress.
In addition to its beautiful foliage, the Bloodgood Japanese Maple also offers attractive bark that provides winter interest. The bark is smooth and gray on younger trees, becoming slightly furrowed and darker with age. This tree is relatively low-maintenance, with minimal pruning required to maintain its shape. It is also resistant to many common pests and diseases, making it a resilient choice for gardeners seeking a visually stunning and dependable ornamental tree.
