Acer palmatum ‘Dissectum Garnet’, commonly referred to as the Japanese Maple, is a deciduous shrub or small tree celebrated for its exquisite, finely cut foliage that resembles lace. The leaves emerge in spring with a vibrant garnet red colour, maintaining this rich hue throughout the summer months before transforming into a stunning crimson in the fall. Typically, this tree reaches a mature height of about 2 to 3 meters and spreads approximately 3 to 4 meters, with its low, cascading branches creating a graceful, dome-like shape. This makes it an elegant addition to any garden space.
In terms of soil preferences, Acer palmatum ‘Dissectum Garnet’ thrives in well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soils, ideally in moist, fertile conditions. However, it shows adaptability to a variety of soil types, provided they are not excessively dry or compacted. Regarding sunlight requirements, this variety performs best in partial shade, which helps protect its delicate leaves from the intense afternoon sun. Nonetheless, it can endure full sun exposure in cooler climates or with adequate watering.
Notably, this Japanese Maple is generally resistant to pests and diseases, although it is important to prevent root rot by ensuring proper drainage. Its striking appearance and manageable size make it an excellent choice for use as a specimen plant, in rock gardens, or near water features. Additionally, it holds significant cultural value, particularly in Japanese gardens, where it is cherished for its beauty and its symbolic associations with peace and serenity.
