Acer platanoides 'Royal Red,' commonly known as the Royal Red Norway Maple, is a stunning deciduous tree renowned for its vibrant foliage and robust nature. This cultivar of the Norway Maple boasts striking, deep maroon leaves that emerge in the spring and maintain their rich colour throughout the growing season, adding a dramatic splash of colour to any landscape. In the fall, the foliage transitions to a brilliant crimson, providing a spectacular autumn display.
At maturity, the Royal Red Norway Maple typically reaches a height of 12 to 15 meters with a spread of approximately 10 to 12 meters. This tree forms a dense, rounded canopy, making it an excellent choice for providing ample shade. Its strong, upright growth habit and tolerance for urban conditions make it a popular selection for street planting and large gardens.
The Royal Red Norway Maple thrives in a variety of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. It prefers well-draining soil but can tolerate occasional wet conditions. This tree is quite adaptable to different pH levels, ranging from acidic to slightly alkaline soils. For optimal growth, the Royal Red Norway Maple should be planted in full sun to partial shade, as it requires at least four to six hours of direct sunlight daily. Notably, this tree is also relatively low-maintenance, resistant to many pests and diseases, and can withstand pollution, making it an ideal choice for urban environments.
