The Acer platanoides 'Crimson King', commonly known as the Purple Norway Maple, is a striking deciduous tree celebrated for its vibrant, deep purple foliage that adds a bold splash of colour to landscapes. This tree is particularly distinctive in spring and summer when its leaves maintain their rich, purplish hue, transitioning to a bronze colour in autumn before they fall. The leaves are broad and palmate, resembling those of the common Norway Maple but with their unique coloration.
At maturity, the Crimson King can reach a height of approximately 12-15 meters with a similar spread, making it an impressive shade tree. Its dense, rounded canopy provides ample shade, making it an excellent choice for large gardens, parks, and street plantings. The tree's bark is greyish-brown and becomes furrowed with age, adding to its ornamental appeal in winter when the foliage is absent.
The Purple Norway Maple is quite adaptable to various soil types, thriving best in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade, although its vibrant leaf colour is most pronounced in full sunlight. This species is tolerant of urban pollution, compacted soils, and various environmental stresses, making it a resilient choice for urban landscapes. Additionally, it is relatively low maintenance, requiring minimal pruning. The Crimson King's striking appearance and adaptability make it a popular choice for adding dramatic foliage colour and shade to any landscape.
