Acer pseudoplatanus Spaethii was first introduced in the early 1860s and is a dark-leaved variant of the native sycamore that may also be known as Acer pseudoplatanus ‘Atropurpureum’.
Spaethii, like the common sycamore, is a large, vigorous growing tree with a rounded crown and smooth grey bark. The large, 5-lobed leaves are green on the surface and a velvety purplish-red on the underside. In autumn the leaves become a beautiful orange-red offering quite dramatic tones which gives it an ornamental quality . This tree does flower, however, they are insignificant and are followed by samaras (double-winged fruit). NB: Be aware the fruit and leaves may be toxic to horses.
This tree tolerates air pollution and will thrive in almost any soil type, is wind-resistant and an ideal tree for coastal locations where it can make an effective defence against strong winds.
The images included in this listing are an example of how the tree will look at maturity – not the tree you will receive. Tree size as per listing description.
