The Acer rubrum, commonly known as the Canadian Red Maple or Red Maple, is a strikingly beautiful deciduous tree that is highly prized for its vibrant autumn foliage. This tree typically reaches a mature height of 12 to 21 meters and can spread to about 9 to 15 meters wide, making it a substantial presence in any landscape. The Red Maple's rounded crown and symmetrical form provide a pleasing aesthetic throughout the seasons.
One of the most notable features of the Canadian Red Maple is its spectacular autumn colour display. The leaves turn a radiant red, sometimes mixed with orange and yellow hues, creating a breathtaking tapestry of colour. In spring, the tree is adorned with small red flowers that precede the emergence of its new leaves, adding early-season interest. The leaves themselves are typically 5 to 10 centimetres (2 to 4 inches) long, with three to five lobes and a distinctive serrated edge.
The Red Maple is highly adaptable to a variety of soil types, which makes it a popular choice for diverse planting sites. It thrives in moist, well-drained soils but is also tolerant of wet conditions and can even withstand occasional flooding. This versatility extends to its sunlight requirements as well; the tree performs well in full sun to partial shade. The combination of its resilience, stunning foliage, and attractive form makes Acer rubrum a cherished addition to parks, gardens, and urban landscapes alike.
