Ailanthus altissima, commonly known as the Tree of Heaven, is characterized by its large, compound leaves that can span up to 60 cm in length, featuring 10 to 41 pinnate leaflets with slightly serrated edges and distinctive glands at the base. In late spring, the tree produces small, yellow-green flowers in large clusters, which, while not particularly showy, are abundant. Following flowering, it yields reddish-brown winged seeds, known as samaras, which add to its visual appeal.
Typically, the Tree of Heaven reaches a mature height of 15 to 25 meters, with a spread of about 10 to 15 meters, creating a broad canopy that provides significant shade. This tree thrives in a variety of soil conditions, including poor, dry, and even polluted urban soils, demonstrating high adaptability and resilience. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate partial shade, making it suitable for urban environments.
Additionally, it is highly tolerant of air pollution and poor soil, which contributes to its prevalence along roadsides and in urban areas. The leaves and flowers emit a strong odour, which can deter planting near residential spaces. Overall, Ailanthus altissima is a robust, rapid-growing tree that poses both benefits and challenges in various landscapes.
