The Italian Alder, scientifically known as Alnus cordata, is a deciduous tree native to southern Italy and the island of Corsica. This elegant tree is notable for its rapid growth and adaptability, making it a popular choice for landscaping and ecological restoration projects. One of its most distinguishing features is its heart-shaped leaves, which are glossy green and can grow up to 10 cm in length. The leaves have finely serrated edges and turn a vibrant yellow in the fall before they drop.
When fully mature, the Italian Alder can reach a height of approximately 20-25 meters with a spread of around 8-10 meters. Its growth form is typically pyramidal when young, becoming more rounded and spreading with age. The tree produces small, inconspicuous, yellowish-green flowers in early spring, followed by woody, cone-like fruit that persist on the tree through winter, adding seasonal interest.
Alnus cordata thrives in a variety of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, and it is particularly well-suited to wet or poorly drained soils thanks to its ability to fix nitrogen. This makes it an excellent choice for improving soil fertility. The Italian Alder prefers full sun to partial shade and is hardy in a variety of climates, though it performs best in temperate regions. Its resilience to pollution and ability to withstand strong winds also contribute to its suitability for urban environments and coastal areas.
