The Alnus incana 'Aurea', commonly known as the Golden Grey Alder, is a captivating deciduous tree renowned for its striking golden-yellow foliage that illuminates gardens, especially in spring. This unique variety of Grey Alder boasts a medium-sized stature, reaching a mature height of approximately 10 to 15 meters and spreading out to about 4 to 6 meters, providing a well-proportioned canopy that adds both height and elegance to the landscape.
Key features of Alnus incana 'Aurea' include its smooth, grey bark and the vibrant, almost luminous, yellow leaves that emerge in spring, gradually transitioning to a lighter green as the season progresses. In early spring, before the leaves fully unfurl, the tree produces inconspicuous catkins that add to its ornamental value. Another notable characteristic is its adaptability; this alder variety exhibits a remarkable tolerance to a wide range of soil types, thriving in both wet and relatively dry conditions, making it an excellent choice for challenging sites where other trees might struggle.
Alnus incana 'Aurea' prefers full sun to partial shade, with optimal growth and foliage color achieved in brighter locations. It is relatively low maintenance, requiring minimal pruning to maintain its shape and promote healthy growth. This tree is also valued for its ability to fix nitrogen in the soil, enhancing fertility and benefiting surrounding plant life. Ideal for creating visual interest in larger gardens or parks, the Golden Grey Alder is a resilient, attractive addition to any landscape, offering year-round beauty with its unique foliage, adaptable nature, and environmental benefits.
