Alnus x spaethii, commonly known as Spaeth's Alder, is a stunning deciduous tree that captivates with its aesthetic appeal and practical benefits. This hybrid alder is a cross between Alnus japonica and Alnus subcordata, inheriting the best characteristics of both parent species. It presents an upright, fast-growing stature with a mature height ranging between 12 to 15 meters and a spread of approximately 6 to 10 meters. Its oval to pyramidal form makes it an attractive addition to landscapes, providing both structure and beauty.
Key features of Spaeth's Alder include its glossy, dark green leaves that remain vibrant throughout the growing season before turning a striking yellow in the fall. The tree produces small, inconspicuous catkins that add subtle interest in the spring. One of its most notable attributes is its smooth, grey-brown bark that becomes slightly fissured with age, adding texture and year-round interest. Additionally, Spaeth's Alder is known for its nitrogen-fixing ability, which enhances soil fertility and benefits surrounding plants.
Spaeth's Alder thrives in a variety of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, provided they are well-drained and slightly acidic to neutral. It demonstrates impressive tolerance to wet conditions and can often be found near streams or in low-lying areas. Full sun to partial shade is ideal for optimal growth, making it a versatile choice for diverse planting sites. Its adaptability, combined with its ornamental and ecological benefits, makes Alnus x spaethii a valuable tree for both urban and rural landscapes.
