Amelanchier canadensis 'Prince William', also known as the Canadian Serviceberry or Shadbush, is a versatile and attractive deciduous shrub or small tree that is cherished for its multi-seasonal appeal. Throughout the year, it offers a captivating display of beauty. Typically, it reaches a mature height of 4 to 5 meters and spreads about 3 to 4 meters, forming a rounded and dense shape.
In early spring, 'Prince William' is adorned with clusters of small, white star-shaped flowers that not only enhance its visual appeal but also attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. The foliage emerges with a bronzy-purple hue, transitions to a lush green in summer, and ends with a striking display of red and orange in autumn. After the flowering period, the tree produces small, edible berries that begin as red and mature to a deep purplish-black, attracting birds and making them suitable for jams and jellies. The smooth, grey bark adds winter interest with its subtle elegance.
This plant thrives in well-drained, acidic to slightly alkaline soils and is adaptable to sandy, loamy, and clay soils. Preferring full sun to partial shade, it performs well in sunny locations but can also tolerate some shade, making it a versatile choice for various garden settings. Overall, Amelanchier canadensis 'Prince William' is an excellent option for gardeners seeking a plant that offers year-round interest, benefits to wildlife, and adaptability to diverse growing conditions.
