Aralia elata, commonly known as the Angelica Tree, is a striking deciduous tree native to East Asia. This unique tree is known for its dramatic appearance, characterized by its stout, spiny stems and large, compound leaves that can reach up to one meter in length. The leaves are bipinnate or tripinnate, giving the tree a lush, feathery appearance during the growing season. In late summer, the tree produces large, showy clusters of creamy white flowers, which are highly attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies. These flowers give way to small, dark purple to black berries that provide food for birds in the fall.
The Angelica Tree typically reaches a mature height of 3 to 6 meters, with a spread of about 2 to 4 meters, making it a relatively small but impactful addition to gardens and landscapes. One of the most striking features of Aralia elata is its bark, which is covered in sharp spines, giving it a somewhat exotic and formidable appearance. The tree's foliage turns a vibrant yellow in the autumn, adding seasonal interest to its ornamental value.
Aralia elata thrives in well-drained soils and is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and clay soils. It prefers a location with full sun to partial shade, making it versatile for different garden settings. While it can tolerate some drought conditions, it performs best with regular watering, especially during prolonged dry spells. This tree can also be used in creating a woodland garden or as a specimen plant where its unusual form and texture can be appreciated. With its unique features and relatively low maintenance requirements, the Angelica Tree is a captivating choice for gardeners seeking a distinctive and beautiful tree.
