The Monkey Puzzle also known as the Araucaria araucana is a widespread species across Southern America, particularly in Chile and Argentina. It naturally grows at high altitudes of around 1500m above sea-level, particularly on the volcanic land found in this part of America and has been introduced into Europe not long after 1795.

The Monkey Puzzle grows always in a straight vertical stem which usually will grow to heights above 20 meters when mature. The branches of the tree grows outwards and are covered in a deep green foliage of evergreen leaves. These leaves are usually sharply pointed and completely cover the branches of the tree. These long branches usually reach around 20cm in length and will give the tree a large spread. Monkey Puzzle also produces large cones which usually last around 3 years on the tree which will then fall off from age or from wind.

From the Monkey Puzzle you can expect grand large tree that looks great all year round. It will perform best in moist loamy soil and will be able to withstand most soil types including chalky soils.
