Erman's Birch, scientifically known as Betula ermanii, is a deciduous tree native to Northeast Asia, including regions like Japan, Korea, and Russia. This striking tree is renowned for its beautiful, silvery-white to pinkish bark that peels away in thin, papery strips, providing year-round visual interest. The bark can also develop a coppery hue as the tree ages, adding to its aesthetic appeal. In autumn, Erman's Birch showcases a stunning display of golden-yellow foliage, creating a lovely contrast against its distinctive bark.
Mature Erman's Birch trees typically reach heights of 10 to 15 meters and have a spread of 6 to 8 meters. These trees have a graceful, upright form and a broad, spreading canopy that provides ample shade. The leaves are ovate with serrated edges, measuring about 5 to 10 centimetres (2 to 4 inches) in length, and they turn a brilliant yellow in the yellow before dropping.
Erman's Birch is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, provided they are well-drained. This tree thrives in full sun to partial shade, making it a versatile addition to various landscape settings. It can tolerate cold climates and is hardy in USDA zones 4 to 7. One notable feature of Betula ermanii is its resistance to birch leaf miners and bronze birch borers, pests that commonly affect other birch species. This resilience, combined with its stunning appearance, makes Erman's Birch a favoured choice for ornamental planting in gardens and parks.
