Birch’s spoil us for choice when it comes to bark interest. It’s often the well-known Himalayan (B.utilis) varieties that are asked for, but B.nigra is a super, versatile tree that could be used more often. As its common name suggests the river birch is excellent in wet, even occasionally water-logged soils, it also copes well in drier urban soils. Known for being shallow rooting so avoid positioning too close to services.
Soft green, diamond shaped leaves emerge as the attractive green / yellow catkins of spring turn to brown. The autumn foliage can be a good display of golden yellow, but the standout feature is its bark. Shaggy and flaking it varies from creamy orange to pinkish and cinnamon. Planted where it catches the late day sun makes a superb focal point. Best we think left un-pruned as it makes a loosely ovoid crown in a naturistic style.
Being native to the south-eastern states of America the River Birch is well acclimatised to extremes in weather conditions. As its name suggests it is often found growing along river banks where it enjoys the moisture rich soils, however it has also been successfully used in urban planting schemes were dry soils and wind are the order of the day.
Catkins adorn in early spring before the diamond shape glossy leaves emerge. Most often chosen for its attractive pink, orange and copper shaggy bark which flutters in the wind and catches the low winter light providing atmosphere and interest in the garden year-round.
