The Betula pendula 'Tristis', commonly known as the Weeping Silver Birch, is a striking deciduous tree celebrated for its elegant, pendulous branches and distinctive white bark. This cultivar of the Silver Birch is particularly noted for its graceful, weeping form, which creates a cascading effect, making it a picturesque addition to any landscape. The bark, smooth and white in its youth, develops characteristic black fissures and ridges as the tree matures, adding a layer of visual interest throughout the year.
At maturity, the Weeping Silver Birch typically reaches a height of 10-15 meters, with a spread of approximately 6-8 meters. Its slender, arching branches create a refined, airy canopy that provides dappled shade beneath. In the spring and summer, the tree is adorned with delicate, ovate leaves that turn a vibrant yellow in the fall, offering a dynamic seasonal display. The catkins, which appear in early spring, add to the tree's ornamental appeal, attracting a variety of wildlife, including birds and pollinators.
Betula pendula 'Tristis' thrives best in well-drained, sandy or loamy soils, though it can tolerate a range of soil types provided they are not overly waterlogged. It prefers full sun to partial shade, making it versatile for different garden settings. This tree is relatively low-maintenance and can be an excellent choice for a focal point in gardens, parks, or large landscapes. Its graceful form and striking bark make it a standout specimen that brings year-round interest and elegance to any setting.
