The Carpinus Betulus ‘Lucas’ which is a variation of the Hornbeam is one that is very similar to the Frans Fontaine with the look of its crown. Having a narrow and pyramidal shape to it yet it can be seen to be different in its looks with the thicker twigs.

The Lucas can be seen growing at the start of spring with large leaves which are noticeably bigger compared to other cultivars and also with a much deeper green colour which gives a more beautiful site during the summer months with the longer days. Come autumn time, the leaves will turn a yellowish colour which looks magnificent and will provide a bit of variation in colour with most other trees having a red or brown autumn foliage. These leaves, if not blown away by the wind can stay long into the winter months adding colour when other trees wouldn’t.

This Hornbeam is a perfect choice for any garden or park with its shape and beautiful foliage. The Lucas will grow in any well drained soils but will grow best in some heavier clay soils.
