The Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca', commonly known as the Blue Atlas Cedar, is a striking evergreen conifer appreciated for its distinctive silver-blue needles and elegant, pyramidal form. This majestic tree is native to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria, making it well-suited to a variety of landscapes due to its robust nature.
Key features of the Blue Atlas Cedar include its dense, horizontal branches that create a striking architectural silhouette, particularly in winter when its unique blue foliage stands out against the stark landscape. The needles are short, about 2-3 cm long, and are arranged in clusters along the branches, giving the tree a lush appearance. As the tree matures, the branches tend to spread horizontally, forming a broad canopy.
When fully grown, the Blue Atlas Cedar can reach a mature height of approximately 15-20 meters, with a spread of about 6-10 meters. It thrives in well-drained soils and is quite adaptable, tolerating a range of soil types from sandy to clay, provided that the soil is not waterlogged. For optimal growth, this tree prefers full sun exposure, although it can tolerate partial shade. Notably, it is drought-resistant once established and can withstand urban pollution, making it an excellent choice for both city and suburban environments. The Blue Atlas Cedar is not only a beautiful focal point in any garden or park but also provides habitat and food for various wildlife, enhancing biodiversity.
