Celtis sinensis, commonly known as the Chinese hackberry, is a deciduous tree notable for its aesthetic and resilient qualities. This tree often reaches a mature height of 10 to 15 meters and typically has a spread of 8 to 12 meters. Its form is generally rounded or vase-shaped, with a broad, spreading canopy that provides ample shade. The bark of the Celtis sinensis is smooth and grey when young, maturing into a corky, ridged texture that adds visual interest throughout the year.
The leaves of the Chinese hackberry are simple, ovate, and serrated along the edges, turning a vibrant yellow in the autumn before falling. The tree produces small, inconspicuous green flowers in spring, which subsequently develop into small, dark purple drupes by late summer. These fruits are not only decorative but also attract various bird species, contributing to the local ecosystem.
Celtis sinensis thrives in a variety of soil types, from sandy to clayey, provided the soil is well-drained. It is highly adaptable and can tolerate both acidic and alkaline conditions. In terms of sunlight, the Chinese hackberry prefers full sun to partial shade, making it a versatile choice for many landscape settings. Its resilience to urban pollution and ability to withstand drought once established make it an excellent option for city parks, streetscapes, and large gardens. Overall, Celtis sinensis is a robust and attractive tree, well-suited to a range of environments.
