Chamaecyparis l. 'Columnaris', commonly known as Columnar Lawson Cypress, is an evergreen coniferous tree famed for its dense, upright, and columnar growth habit. This cultivar showcases striking blue-green foliage that retains its vibrant colour throughout the year. The tree's needle-like leaves are soft to the touch and emit a pleasant, subtle fragrance, making it a popular choice for ornamental planting.
At maturity, Chamaecyparis l. 'Columnaris' can reach a height of approximately 10 to 15 meters. Its spread is relatively narrow, often ranging between 2 to 3 meters, which makes it an excellent choice for planting in areas where space is limited or for creating vertical accents in garden landscapes. The tree's foliage consists of fine-textured, scale-like leaves that are tightly packed along the branches, giving it a lush, full appearance. The blue-green colour provides an elegant contrast against other plants, especially during the winter months. This tree also produces small, rounded cones that add to its visual interest, though they are not its primary ornamental feature.
Chamaecyparis l. 'Columnaris' thrives best in well-drained, fertile soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils, but performs poorly in waterlogged conditions. The tree prefers a position in full sun to partial shade, where it can receive ample light to support its growth and maintain its vibrant foliage color. This cultivar is an excellent choice for hedges, screens, or as a standalone specimen in gardens, providing year-round structure and beauty. Its low maintenance needs and adaptability to various conditions make it a favorite among gardeners and landscapers alike.
