Cladrastis kentukea, commonly known as Kentucky Yellow-Wood, is a deciduous tree celebrated for its stunning seasonal displays and versatile growing conditions. This medium-sized tree typically reaches a mature height of 10 to 15 meters with an equally impressive spread of 10 to 15 meters, forming a broad, rounded crown. Its smooth, grey bark and picturesque branch structure add to its ornamental appeal throughout the year.
One of the most striking features of the Kentucky Yellow-Wood is its fragrant, pendulous clusters of white, pea-like flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer, typically in May or June. These blossoms, which can cascade up to 30 centimetres (12 inches) in length, attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. In the fall, the tree's foliage transitions to a brilliant yellow, adding vibrant colour to the landscape. The tree's compound leaves, usually composed of 7 to 11 leaflets, create a lush, green canopy during the growing season.
Kentucky Yellow-Wood thrives in well-drained soils, preferring loamy or sandy substrates but demonstrating adaptability to a range of soil types, including clay, provided they are not excessively wet. The tree flourishes in full sun to partial shade, making it a versatile choice for various landscape settings. Notably, Cladrastis kentukea is valued for its resilience and relative ease of care, making it a favoured choice for gardeners and landscapers seeking a beautiful, low-maintenance addition to parks, large gardens, and residential areas.
