The Corylus avellana 'Contorta', commonly known as the Contorted Hazel or Harry Lauder's Walking Stick, is a distinctive ornamental shrub renowned for its unique, twisted branches and intriguing winter silhouette. This deciduous plant is highly valued in garden landscapes for its unusual, gnarled growth habit that can add architectural interest even when leafless.
Key features of the Contorted Hazel include its twisted, corkscrew-like branches and colourful catkins that hang like tassels in late winter to early spring, providing early pollen for bees. The leaves are broadly ovate, with a slightly serrated edge, and turn a pleasant yellow in autumn before falling. At maturity, the Contorted Hazel typically reaches a height of 2-3 meters and a spread of around 2-3 meters, making it a compact and manageable addition to most garden spaces.
The Contorted Hazel thrives in a variety of soil types, provided they are well-draining. It prefers a position in full sun to partial shade and is relatively low maintenance once established. This hardy shrub is also tolerant of urban pollution, making it suitable for city gardens. Its unique form coupled with its seasonal interest makes Corylus avellana 'Contorta' a standout specimen in any landscape design, ideal for adding year-round visual interest and diversity.
