The Common Hazel (Corylus avellana) is a deciduous tree or large shrub known for its rounded, bushy form and the production of edible nuts known as hazelnuts. This versatile plant can grow to a mature height of approximately 3-8 meters, with a spread that generally matches its height, forming a dense, multi-stemmed structure. Its leaves are broadly ovate, with a slightly serrated edge, and turn a rich yellow in the autumn, adding seasonal interest to the landscape.
One of the key features of the Common Hazel is its early spring catkins, which are long, slender, and yellow. These catkins appear before the leaves, providing a valuable source of pollen for early pollinators. The tree produces its recognizable nuts in clusters, typically maturing by late summer to early autumn. These nuts are not only a favourite among wildlife but also valued for their culinary uses by humans.
The Common Hazel thrives in a variety of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, as long as they are well-drained. It prefers a position in full sun to partial shade, making it adaptable to a range of garden settings. Additionally, the Hazel is often utilized in hedgerows and woodland gardens for its dense foliage and wildlife benefits. Its ability to coppice well makes it a favourite for traditional hedge-laying, providing both ecological value and practical use in sustainable land management.
