Crataegus monogyna, commonly known as Hawthorn, is a deciduous tree appreciated for its resilience and ornamental value. This small to medium-sized tree typically reaches a mature height of 5 to 14 meters, with a spread of 4 to 8 meters, making it a versatile choice for gardens and hedgerows. The Hawthorn is characterized by its dense, thorny branches, which bear deeply lobed, glossy green leaves that turn to rich shades of yellow and bronze in autumn.
In late spring, Hawthorn produces a profusion of fragrant, white to pale pink flowers arranged in flat-topped clusters called corymbs. These blossoms are a vital source of nectar for pollinators, particularly bees. By late summer to early autumn, the flowers give way to small, red fruits known as haws, which are not only a visual delight but also serve as food for birds and other wildlife.
Hawthorn is highly adaptable to various soil types, thriving in loamy, clay, sandy, or chalky soils, provided they are well-drained. It shows a preference for full sun to partial shade, making it suitable for different garden settings. Notably, Hawthorn is tolerant of urban pollution and can withstand exposed and windy sites, adding to its robustness. Whether used as a standalone specimen tree, in a wildlife-friendly hedge, or for its traditional medicinal properties, Crataegus monogyna remains a valuable and attractive addition to any landscape.
