First unearthed in China in 1869, Davidia involucrata is one of the most treasured and beautiful must have specimens of the tree world. Its a difficult tree to propagate as early plant hunters discovered and it wasn't until the turn of the 20th century that it was probably introduced to the UK.
Ultimately an elegant mid size conical tree, it’s main ornamental feature arrives shortly after the young heart shaped leaves have emerged tinged red/purple. Then hosts of white blooms each consisting of yellow to purple marble-size flower heads surrounded by two showy white bracts which dance and flutter in the wind giving rise to the trees common names. A mature specimen in full late spring flower truly is a wonderful sight.
Despite its somewhat delicate appearance Davidia is a tough cookie and grows well on any reasonably fertile garden soil. Its proven to do well in polluted urban areas and is perfectly hardy to cope with British winters. Invariably however to see this tree at its glorious best, its advised to plant in a sheltered spot of the garden away from severe icy winds.
Received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1984
