Elaeagnus × ebbingei, commonly referred to as Elaeagnus, is a versatile evergreen shrub celebrated for its ornamental beauty and practical applications in landscaping. This hardy hybrid, resulting from the cross between Elaeagnus macrophylla and Elaeagnus pungens, features leathery, glossy leaves that showcase a striking silvery-green hue. The undersides of the leaves are silvery, contributing to a shimmering effect that enhances its aesthetic appeal, especially when swayed by the wind. In the autumn, the shrub produces small, fragrant, creamy-white flowers that attract pollinators, followed by edible red berries in the spring, adding to its charm and utility.
Typically, Elaeagnus × ebbingei reaches a mature height of 3 to 4 meters with a spread of about 2 to 3 meters, making it an excellent option for creating hedges or screens. This shrub is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including poorer and sandy conditions, although it thrives in well-drained soil. Once established, it can tolerate dry conditions, making it a resilient choice for gardeners. Elaeagnus prefers full sun to partial shade, flourishing best in sunnier spots where it tends to produce more flowers. Its hardiness extends to coastal environments, withstanding salt spray, thus making it a suitable candidate for seaside gardens. Overall, Elaeagnus × ebbingei is an ideal low-maintenance shrub that provides both ornamental and functional benefits in various landscapes.
