The Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Green', commonly known as the Upright Green Beech, is a striking and elegant deciduous tree renowned for its narrow, columnar form. This cultivar is admired for its lush, dark green foliage that emerges in the spring and remains vibrant throughout the growing season before turning a golden-brown hue in the fall. The leaves are smooth and glossy, providing a dense, attractive canopy that adds vertical interest to any landscape.
Reaching a mature height of approximately 15 to 20 meters and a spread of about 3 to 5 meters, the 'Dawyck Green' is an excellent choice for smaller gardens or confined spaces where a traditional beech tree might be too expansive. Its slender profile makes it ideal for creating natural screens or as a standout specimen tree in both formal and informal settings. The tree’s growth habit is slow to moderate, which allows it to maintain its shape with minimal pruning.
The Upright Green Beech thrives best in well-drained, fertile soils with a preference for slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. It is adaptable to a range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, or clay soils, provided they are not waterlogged. This tree prefers full sun to partial shade, ensuring it receives ample light to promote healthy foliage and growth. Notably, it is also relatively tolerant of urban pollution, making it suitable for city environments. With its unique form and vibrant foliage, the Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Green' is a valuable addition to any garden or landscape design.
