Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea Pendula', commonly known as Weeping Purple Beech, is a striking deciduous tree renowned for its unique weeping form and rich, dark purple foliage. This cultivar stands out in any landscape with its dramatic, cascading branches that create a picturesque, umbrella-like canopy. The leaves are broad, ovate, and maintain their deep purple hue throughout the growing season, turning slightly coppery in autumn before falling.
At maturity, the Weeping Purple Beech typically reaches a height of about 3 to 6 meters with a similar spread, making it a relatively compact tree compared to other beech varieties. This makes it an excellent choice for smaller gardens or as a focal point in larger landscapes. Its growth habit is often dependent on how it is trained, as its naturally pendulous branches can be shaped to suit various garden designs.
This tree prefers well-drained, fertile soils and can tolerate a range of soil types, from sandy to clay, provided the drainage is adequate. It thrives best in full sun to partial shade, with the foliage colour being most vibrant when exposed to more sunlight. However, it can also handle some degree of shade, making it quite adaptable. Notable for its resilience, Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea Pendula' requires minimal maintenance once established, although it benefits from occasional pruning to maintain its shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. Its unique form and stunning foliage make it a standout choice for gardeners seeking to add a touch of elegance and drama to their outdoor spaces.
