The Fagus sylvatica 'Tricolor,' commonly known as the Variegated Beech, is a deciduous tree prized for its striking foliage and elegant form. This ornamental tree boasts leaves with a unique combination of colours – deep green centres surrounded by irregular margins of pink and creamy white, creating a visually captivating display throughout the growing season. During autumn, the foliage transitions to a warm, golden-brown hue, adding seasonal interest to any landscape.
In terms of size, the Variegated Beech typically reaches a mature height of 10-15 meters with a similar spread of around 8-12 meters. This makes it an excellent choice for medium to large gardens where it can stand as a stunning focal point or be incorporated into mixed woodland plantings.
Adaptable to a range of soil types, Fagus sylvatica 'Tricolor' prefers well-drained, loamy soils but can also tolerate clay and sandy conditions with adequate moisture. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, though the best variegation is often observed with some protection from the harshest midday sun. The Variegated Beech is relatively low-maintenance once established, requiring minimal pruning and care. Additionally, its smooth, grey bark and stately form add to its year-round appeal, making it a cherished addition to any garden or landscape.
