The Fraxinus angustifolia 'Raywood', commonly known as the Claret Ash, is a deciduous tree renowned for its striking autumn foliage. This medium-sized tree typically reaches a mature height of 10 to 15 meters, with a spread of approximately 6 to 10 meters, making it a suitable choice for spacious gardens or parklands. The Claret Ash is particularly notable for its deep, claret-coloured leaves that emerge in the fall, creating a vibrant and eye-catching display.
The tree has a refined, columnar to rounded shape, with a smooth, grey bark that becomes more fissured with age. Its pinnate leaves are composed of 5 to 9 leaflets, providing a light and airy canopy that offers dappled shade. During the growing season, the foliage is a rich, dark green which transitions to the tree's signature claret hue as the weather cools, adding a dynamic element to the landscape.
The Claret Ash thrives in a variety of soil types, including loam, clay, and sandy soils, provided they are well-drained. It prefers full sun to partial shade, making it versatile for different garden settings. Additionally, it is relatively drought-tolerant once established, though it benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry periods. This tree is also resistant to many common pests and diseases, though it should be monitored for signs of ash dieback. Overall, the Fraxinus angustifolia 'Raywood' is an elegant and hardy choice for those looking to add seasonal colour and structure to their outdoor spaces.
