The Ginkgo biloba 'Brivingtetun', commonly known as the Maidenhair Tree, is a unique and ancient tree species cherished for its distinctive fan-shaped leaves and remarkable resilience. This cultivar is particularly noted for its striking autumn display, where the foliage turns a brilliant golden yellow before gently falling to the ground. The tree is renowned for its symmetrical, pyramidal form when young, gradually becoming more irregular and spreading with age.
Mature Ginkgo biloba 'Brivingtetun' trees can reach a height of approximately 15 to 25 meters, with a spread of around 8 to 10 meters. This makes it an excellent choice for urban landscapes, parks, and large gardens, providing both aesthetic appeal and shade. The Maidenhair Tree is dioecious, meaning that there are separate male and female trees, and it is usually the male trees that are preferred for planting as they do not produce the foul-smelling fruit of the females.
One of the notable features of the Ginkgo biloba 'Brivingtetun' is its adaptability to a wide range of soil types, including acidic, alkaline, and loamy soils. It thrives best in well-drained soil but is remarkably tolerant of pollution and compacted soils, making it a resilient choice for city environments. This tree prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, making it versatile for various planting locations. The Ginkgo biloba 'Brivingtetun' is also highly resistant to pests and diseases, further enhancing its reputation as a low-maintenance and long-lived tree, often surviving for centuries.
