The Ginkgo biloba, commonly known as the Maidenhair Tree, is a unique and ancient species with a rich history dating back over 200 million years, often referred to as a living fossil. This deciduous tree is easily recognizable by its distinctive fan-shaped leaves, which turn a stunning golden yellow in the fall, creating a beautiful display. The leaves have a unique bilobed shape, resembling the leaflets of the maidenhair fern, hence the common name.
At maturity, the Ginkgo biloba can reach a height of 20 to 35 meters with a spread of about 8 to 15 meters. The tree has an upright, pyramidal growth habit when young but becomes more irregular and spreading with age. Its bark is light grey with deep furrows, adding to its aesthetic appeal and making it an attractive feature in landscapes.
Ginkgo biloba is highly adaptable and can thrive in a variety of soil types, including acidic, alkaline, loamy, sandy, and clay soils, provided they are well-drained. It prefers full sun to partial shade, making it a versatile choice for different planting locations. Notably, the Ginkgo is incredibly resilient, tolerant of urban pollution, and resistant to pests and diseases. It is dioecious, meaning there are separate male and female trees, with the female trees producing seeds with a strong odor, so male cultivars are often preferred for ornamental planting. This tree is not only a symbol of longevity and endurance but also a magnificent addition to any garden or urban setting.
