Ilex 'Golden King', commonly known as the Golden King Holly, is a striking evergreen shrub or small tree that boasts vibrant foliage and a unique, variegated appearance. This cultivar of Ilex aquifolium features glossy, dark green leaves with bold, golden-yellow margins, creating a luminous effect that adds visual interest to any garden throughout the year. The leaves are typically spiny, adding an extra layer of texture and deterrence against browsing animals.
Reaching a mature height of approximately 4 to 6 meters and a similar spread, Ilex 'Golden King' is well-suited to a variety of garden settings, including formal hedges, mixed borders, and as a standalone specimen plant. It is relatively slow-growing, which makes it easy to maintain and shape through pruning. In addition to its foliage, this holly produces small, inconspicuous white flowers in the spring, followed by bright red berries in the autumn, which are a valuable food source for birds.
Ilex 'Golden King' thrives in well-drained soil and is adaptable to a range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. It performs best in full sun to partial shade, making it a versatile choice for different garden exposures. This holly is also relatively hardy, tolerating urban pollution and coastal conditions, which expands its usability in various landscapes. Regular watering during dry periods and a yearly application of mulch can help maintain its health and vigor. With its striking appearance and adaptable nature, Ilex 'Golden King' is a valuable addition to any garden.
