Ilex aquifolium, commonly known as English Holly or European Holly, is a striking evergreen tree that brings a touch of elegance to gardens and landscapes. This tree is well-regarded for its lustrous, dark green, spiny leaves and bright red berries that persist into winter, providing a festive appearance. The dense foliage makes it a popular choice for hedging and ornamental planting.
Mature Ilex aquifolium trees typically reach heights of 10-25 meters, with a spread of 3-8 meters. The tree’s growth habit is pyramidal when young, becoming more rounded and irregular as it matures. The bark is smooth and grey when young, gradually becoming rougher and more fissured with age. Small, white to pale pink flowers bloom in the spring, attracting pollinators such as bees. The iconic red berries, which are actually drupes, mature in the fall and are a crucial food source for birds during the colder months.
Ilex aquifolium thrives in well-drained soils and is adaptable to a range of soil types, from sandy to clayey. It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH. This versatile tree can grow in full sun to partial shade, although it produces more berries when exposed to more sunlight. It is tolerant of urban pollution and salt, making it suitable for city and coastal environments. Notably, the leaves and berries are toxic to humans and pets if ingested, so caution is advised in households with young children or animals. Overall, Ilex aquifolium is a resilient and attractive addition to any garden, celebrated for its year-round beauty and ecological benefits.
