The Juglans ‘nigra’ also known as the Black Walnut was introduced into Europe in 1629 from central and eastern America. This tree may seem similar to a common walnut but can be easily identified by the foliage.
The Walnut will usually come into leaf later than most other trees, usually whenever temperatures start to pick up. Once it has come to leaf, it will produce a long foliage with each leaf consisting of around 23 leaflets. During the summertime, an abundance of nuts are produced by the Black Walnut which are contained in a hard shell. These can be perfect in a parkland setting in attracting wildlife such as squirrels to the area. During autumn the leaves will turn a bright yellow colour which looks stunning on a good autumns evening. The Black Walnut can be found with a rough, grey coloured bark which distinguishes it even more to the Juglans regia which has a smoother bark.
The Juglans ‘nigra’ can be seen growing to heights well above 20m high and wide so ensure that there is a large amount of room for this magnificent tree to spread. Best suited for parklands and estates. The Black Walnut will perform very well on most soils and will be best in rich, loamy soil.
