The Liquidambar 'Lane Roberts', also known as the Sweet Gum, is a captivating deciduous tree often grown in a pleached form to create elegant, structured landscapes or screening. This cultivar is renowned for its striking autumn foliage, which transitions through a spectrum of deep purples, reds, and oranges, providing a vivid display before the leaves fall.
When fully matured, the Liquidambar 'Lane Roberts' can reach an approximate height of 10-15 meters, with a spread of about 6-8 meters. The pleached form, where the branches are trained to grow horizontally in a frame, can be maintained at a specific height, often around 2-3 meters, depending on the design and pruning regimen. This makes it an excellent choice for creating living screens, formal hedges, or architectural garden features.
In terms of growing conditions, this tree prefers well-drained soil but is quite adaptable, tolerating a range of soil types from clay to sandy loams. It thrives best in full sun to partial shade, ensuring it receives sufficient light to develop its characteristic vibrant autumn colours. Additionally, the Liquidambar 'Lane Roberts' is relatively low-maintenance once established, with moderate drought tolerance and good resistance to pests and diseases. Its unique, ridged bark and distinctive, star-shaped leaves make it a standout feature in any garden or landscape design.
