Liquidambar styraciflua 'Lane Roberts', commonly known as Sweet Gum, is a deciduous tree celebrated for its stunning autumn foliage and distinctive star-shaped leaves. This cultivar is particularly noted for its deep, rich autumn colors which range from burgundy to almost black, providing a striking display in any landscape. The tree has a pyramidal shape when young, gradually becoming more rounded as it matures.
Reaching a mature height of approximately 15-20 meters, with a spread of about 8-10 meters, the 'Lane Roberts' Sweet Gum is a moderately fast-growing tree. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, making it versatile for various garden settings. This tree prefers well-drained, moist, and slightly acidic soils, although it can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils.
One of the most notable features of the Liquidambar styraciflua 'Lane Roberts' is its corky-winged bark, which adds visual interest during the winter months when the tree is bare. Additionally, the tree produces spiky, ball-shaped fruits that persist into winter, adding texture to the landscape. This cultivar is also relatively resistant to pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners seeking both beauty and resilience.
