Magnolia 'Susan,' commonly known simply as Magnolia, is a deciduous shrub or small tree renowned for its spectacular springtime blooms. This hybrid magnolia, part of the "Little Girl" series, owes its charm to its vibrant, reddish-purple flowers that appear just before the lush green leaves unfurl. Each flower is goblet-shaped, measuring up to 15 cm across, and typically blooms in mid to late spring, providing a striking visual display in any garden setting.
At maturity, Magnolia 'Susan' reaches a modest height of approximately 2.5 to 3 meters, with a similar spread, making it well-suited for smaller gardens or as a standout specimen in larger landscapes. The growth habit is typically upright and open, though it can be pruned to maintain a more compact form. This magnolia thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils and prefers a location that receives full sun to partial shade. The sunnier the spot, the more prolific the bloom, though partial shade can help preserve the vibrancy of its flowers.
Notable for its resilience, Magnolia 'Susan' is relatively low-maintenance and can tolerate a range of soil conditions, provided they are not waterlogged. It is also known for its resistance to many common pests and diseases. Beyond its spring blossoms, the tree offers seasonal interest with its attractive foliage, which turns a pleasing golden-yellow in the fall. Whether as a focal point or part of a mixed border, Magnolia 'Susan' adds elegance and colour to any garden.
