Magnolia grandiflora also known as Evergreen Magnolia is a large evergreen that is quite often grown against a wall. A native to the United States which can be seen to grow up to around 20m in its native habitat but in the UK it will grow to around 10m. It was first brough over here in 1734.

Magnolia grandiflora is seen displaying large, leathery leaves that have a very glossy dark-green coloured on top with a more bronzed furry underneath. During the late summer time, Magnolia will produce huge flowers that are of a cream colour and have a lemon scent to them. These flowers look beautiful in contrast to the dark evergreen leaves giving a beautiful display during the late summer. Magnolia will grow up in a very dense form and with age will be seen to develop a pyramidal form.

Magnolia grows best in fertile, well drained soils and will be able to tolerate chalky soils. Best grown in a sheltered area such as near a wall. Hardy.
