Leonard Messel is a fantastic multi-stemmed tree, that is a hybrid of the Magnolia Kobus and Magnolia stellata. This Magnolia is one that is very popular, notably for its frost resistance which makes it a good choice for colder climates. It also won Award of Garden Merit in 1993.
During the early months of the year, Leonard Messel can be seen with Velvety cased buds which from January onwards, begin to swell more and more. Come Spring, the buds will burst into bloom, giving a beautiful display of pink tinged flowers which will brighten any garden during the late spring and early summer. These blooming takes place after other Magnolias which is why Leonard’s flowers are so frost resistant. Come Autumn time, Leonard Messel’s leaves will turn from a deep green to a yellow colour which looks magnificent and keeps a garden bright when the skies get duller. Leonard Messel is a short multi-stemmed tree only growing to around 4-5m tall with a 3-4m spread.
Leonard Messel prefers rich, well drained soils that are consistently moist and slightly acidic. The Magnolias are adaptable to other soil types including clay and sandy soils. Grown best in full sun or partial shade with some shelter from cold and dry winds.
