Malus domestica 'Discovery', commonly known as the Discovery apple, is an early-season cultivar celebrated for its crisp, juicy flesh and delightful flavour. This deciduous tree is a popular choice for home orchards due to its manageable size and reliable fruit production. At maturity, the Discovery apple tree typically reaches a height of around 3 to 4 meters and a similar spread, making it suitable for smaller gardens as well.
One of the key features of the Discovery apple tree is its striking blossom. In the spring, it produces an abundance of fragrant, pale pink to white flowers that attract pollinators such as bees. By late summer, usually in August, the tree yields medium-sized apples with a vibrant red skin and a creamy, crisp interior. These apples are excellent for fresh eating and also work well in culinary applications like baking and juicing.
The Discovery apple tree thrives best in well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. It prefers a sunny location to ensure the best fruit quality and productivity, although it can tolerate partial shade. Regular watering and a balanced fertilizer regime will help maintain its health and vigour. Additionally, this cultivar has a good resistance to common apple tree diseases such as scab and mildew, making it a resilient and low-maintenance option for both novice and experienced gardeners.
