Malus domestica 'Ellison's Orange' is a charming apple variety that stands out for its distinctive flavour, which harmoniously blends a hint of aniseed with the traditional apple taste. The apples themselves are medium-sized and boast a rich, aromatic scent, encased in beautiful golden-yellow skin often adorned with a red flush. This cultivar typically matures to a height of about 4 to 5 meters and spreads around 3 to 4 meters, making it a superb option for smaller gardens or orchard environments.
In spring, 'Ellison's Orange' showcases a stunning display of white blossoms, attracting pollinators with its early nectar source. The harvest period for these delightful apples falls between late September and early October, when they reach their peak sweetness. Renowned for their sweet yet slightly tangy flavour, these apples are perfect for fresh eating, baking, or cooking. Furthermore, this variety offers moderate resistance to common apple diseases such as scab, which can simplify maintenance compared to more vulnerable types.
For optimal growth, 'Ellison's Orange' prefers well-drained, fertile soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. It flourishes in full sun, which is crucial for achieving the best fruit yield and quality, although it can tolerate partial shade to a degree. Regular watering, especially during dry spells, is essential to promote healthy growth and abundant fruit production.
