The Malus domestica 'Granny Smith', widely known as the Granny Smith apple tree, is a popular cultivar celebrated for its bright green, crisp, and tart apples. Originating from Australia in the 19th century, this apple tree has become a favourite among gardeners and commercial growers alike due to its vigorous growth and reliable fruit production.
Key features of the Granny Smith apple tree include its medium to large size, with a mature height ranging from 4 to 7 meters and a spread of about 4 to 6 meters. The tree showcases a rounded, spreading canopy with dense foliage, making it not only a productive fruit bearer but also an attractive addition to any landscape. The Granny Smith apples themselves are distinctive with their bright green skin, firm texture, and tart flavour, making them ideal for both eating fresh and cooking.
This apple tree prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a pH ranging from slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0-7.0). It thrives best in full sun, requiring at least six hours of direct sunlight per day to produce high-quality fruit. While it can tolerate partial shade, fruit production and overall tree health are optimized with full sunlight exposure. Additionally, the Granny Smith apple tree is relatively hardy and can withstand a variety of climates, though it performs best in temperate regions. Regular watering, especially during dry periods, and proper pruning will help maintain tree vigour and fruit quality.
Notably, the tree is also known for its relatively late harvest season, typically from late October to early November in the Northern Hemisphere, providing a fresh supply of apples well into the fall season.
