Malus domestica 'Rode Jonathan,' commonly known as the 'Rode Jonathan' apple tree, is a deciduous tree that is highly valued for its delicious and versatile fruit. This cultivar is renowned for producing medium-sized apples with a deep, rich red skin and a tart, yet slightly sweet flavour. The flesh of the 'Rode Jonathan' apple is crisp and juicy, making it an excellent choice for eating fresh, baking, and cider production.
At maturity, the 'Rode Jonathan' apple tree typically reaches a height of about 4 to 6 meters and has a spread of approximately 3 to 5 meters. This size makes it suitable for both home gardens and small orchards. The tree has a moderately spreading habit with a rounded canopy, which provides a good balance of shade and sunlight penetration, essential for fruit ripening.
The 'Rode Jonathan' apple tree thrives in well-drained, loamy soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0, although it can adapt to a range of soil types as long as they are not waterlogged. This cultivar prefers full sun, requiring at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day to ensure optimal growth and fruit production. Additionally, the tree is relatively hardy and can tolerate cold winters, making it suitable for growing in temperate climates. Notably, 'Rode Jonathan' is also known for its good disease resistance, particularly to common apple ailments such as apple scab and powdery mildew, which makes it a low-maintenance choice for growers.
