Morus alba, commonly known as the White Mulberry, is a deciduous tree that belongs to the Moraceae family. This versatile and resilient species is native to China but has been cultivated and naturalized in many parts of the world, primarily for its leaves, which are the primary food source for silkworms. The White Mulberry typically reaches a mature height of 10 to 20 meters, with a spread of 10 to 15 meters, making it a medium to large-sized tree. Its broad, spreading habit provides ample shade, making it an attractive choice for landscapes and urban settings.
One of the key features of Morus alba is its deeply lobed leaves, which can vary significantly in shape even on the same tree. These leaves are bright green and glossy, adding a vibrant touch to any garden. In spring, the tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers that give way to clusters of sweet, edible fruits. The fruits resemble blackberries and can range in colour from white to pink, red, or even dark purple when ripe. These fruits are not only a favourite among birds but also can be enjoyed fresh or used in jams and desserts.
Morus alba is highly adaptable and can thrive in a variety of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. It prefers well-drained soils but is tolerant of both acidic and alkaline conditions. The tree is also remarkably drought-resistant once established. In terms of sun and shade preferences, the White Mulberry flourishes best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Its resilience and adaptability make it a popular choice for erosion control, windbreaks, and as a shade tree in warmer climates. Additionally, its rapid growth rate and tolerance to pruning allow it to be shaped and maintained easily, whether grown as a specimen tree or part of a larger landscape design.
