The Black Mulberry tree (Morus nigra) is a deciduous tree known for its attractive form and delicious, dark purple to black berries. Typically, a mature Black Mulberry tree reaches a height of 10-12 meters and can have a spread of 10-15 meters, creating a broad, rounded canopy that provides ample shade. Its leaves are heart-shaped with serrated edges, and the tree is known for its longevity, often living for several hundred years under optimal conditions.
One of the standout features of the Black Mulberry tree is its fruit, which resembles elongated blackberries. The berries are not only a delightful treat for humans but also attract a variety of birds and wildlife. These fruits ripen in mid to late summer and have a sweet-tart flavor that can be used in jams, desserts, and even wines.
The Black Mulberry tree thrives best in well-drained, loamy soil but is quite adaptable to various soil types, including sandy and clay soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade and requires a moderate amount of water, especially during dry periods. Given its resilience and the ease of care, the Black Mulberry tree is an excellent addition to both urban and rural landscapes, offering aesthetic value and a bountiful harvest of berries.
