Phellodendron amurense, commonly referred to as the Amur Cork Tree, is a remarkable deciduous tree celebrated for its unique corky bark and lush green foliage. This species belongs to the Rutaceae family and flourishes in its native habitats across Northeast Asia, particularly in countries such as China, Japan, and Korea.
When fully grown, the Amur Cork Tree can attain heights ranging from 10 to 15 meters, while its canopy can spread about 10 to 12 meters, creating a rounded shape that provides generous shade. One of its most striking characteristics is its thick, deeply furrowed bark, which showcases a greyish-brown colour, adding to its visual appeal. The tree features pinnate leaves that transform into a stunning yellow hue during autumn, enhancing the seasonal beauty of landscapes. Female trees bear small black drupes that attract a variety of wildlife, thereby increasing the tree's ecological significance.
Phellodendron amurense is adaptable to various soil types, thriving best in well-drained, fertile soils, and showing tolerance for both acidic and alkaline conditions. While it prefers full sun for optimal growth, it can also survive in partial shade as long as it receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Additionally, this tree is relatively low-maintenance and resistant to pests and diseases, although its potential invasiveness in certain regions suggests that care should be taken to consider local planting guidelines before introduction.
