Pinus nigra also known as the Black Pine is a very hardy evergreen tree that is able to withstand tough and exposed conditions making it perfect for being grown in the UK. It was introduced here in the 1830s and has since been known for being grown usually in exposed and costal areas.
Black Pine will grow into a very pyramidal shape when mature similar to other conifers and will grow to be a very large tree with most reaching around 20m in height when mature. Black Pine can be seen displaying a magnificent display of deep green foliage all year round, in the form of double needles that are longer than other Pine variants. During winter, pinecones can be found on the branches of Black Pine and will be around 5-8cm in length.
Black Pine will thrive well on a large range of different soil types, including chalky soils but will not be able to tolerate any sort of waterlogging. Able to withstand costal and harsh winter conditions, including salt winds. Best to be planted with a large amount of room for Black Pine to grow outwards. Hardy.
